Kentucky Delta Rural Project

Initiated in 2001, the Kentucky Delta Rural Project centered on addressing community-initiated health issues through the establishment of local community health councils in service area counties. In 2004, KDRP graduated to a regional approach and focused efforts on top community driven issues including obesity and wellness, health literacy, dental health, and prescription assistance. The goal of the Project is to enhance the culture of wellness in the KDRP service area elementary schools by involving school staff, students and community members.  Objectives within the goal are to: 1) maintain school participation in KDRP’s school wellness initiative and 2) build a sustainable wellness committee framework in service area elementary schools.

The Kentucky Delta Rural Project promotes wellness activity in 68 elementary schools including:

  • School wellness committees;
  • TAKE 10! ® curriculum usage in classrooms, which incorporates 10-minutes physical activity breaks into core curriculum;
  • Champions Meetings, events for school representatives offering Project updates and continuation education credit; and
  • Delta Tours, interactive school assemblies for 4th graders focusing on healthy dental, diet, exercise and lifestyle choices.

From 2003 to 2014, KDRP supported prescription assistance efforts including Hopkins County Community Clinic in Madisonville (Hopkins County, KY), Helping Hands Health Clinic in Elkton (Todd County, KY), and Helpings Hands of Trigg County in Cadiz, KY. The program served more than 3,400 clients with more than $8 million estimated value of medications distributed. Support for the program was concluded in early 2014 due to a shift in grant funding key focus areas.
