In 1998, the University of Louisville School of Medicine began a regional campus by developing the Off-Campus Teaching Center in Madisonville, Kentucky.
The idea is simple: provide first-class, individualized clinical training in an environment that allows students to experience the benefits of small-town life. The goal, of course, is to increase the number of physicians in rural areas.
The key to the program is first-class training. If students decide during their training that small-town life is not for them, the Trover Campus will still prepare them for virtually any specialty they pursue.
Baptist Health now hosts the Trover Campus and serves 12 counties (population 300,000) with a 75+ physician group practice including more than 25 specialties, a 410-bed hospital with 100 physicians on staff, the latest diagnostic and treatment technologies, a state-of-the-art cancer treatment facility and more. It’s urban-level training in a safe, friendly rural area.
University of Louisville preclinical medical students have the opportunity to spend two three-week summer sessions at the Trover Campus, working with primary care preceptors. Up to twelve students are selected to spend their third and fourth years of training in Madisonville.
